Quality at a fair price
It feels like a really well-made grinder for the price.
The handle-locking system is clever and, in my opinion, works much better than 1Zpresso’s equivalent. The rubber pad on the end of the handle is also a great innovation, as it means you can use the handle as a knocker too.
The textured body is excellent and gives you a good grip while grinding. I’ve noticed some stuttering, especially with lighter roasts. The grinder’s aggressive action with a completely straight handle doesn’t exactly help, but fortunately this is much less noticeable with medium and darker roasts—at least not to a bothersome extent.
The grinder weighs 800 g, but its all-metal construction also adds a nice sense of quality. The bean capacity is just over 25 g with medium/dark-roast beans, so 25 g fits comfortably with a little room to spare. The body has a circumference of 17.5 cm.
The grounds container is threaded, which works well for me. Unscrewing it with a few turns is a small price to pay for the peace of mind of knowing the coffee won’t accidentally end up on the floor while you’re using the grinder.
I do have to take points off for the grind-size markings, which are far too small, and for the grind adjustment, which could offer more tactile feedback when changing settings—ideally a clear click as you turn the ring. As it is, the adjustment ring sort of blends in with the rest of the body’s texture, so if your supporting hand is in the wrong place, the grind setting can change while you’re grinding.
Apparently, the grinder isn’t quite suitable for espresso without modifications. I don’t drink espresso myself, so I can’t comment further, but Coffee Chronicler has looked into this in more detail in their Timemore S3 review.
The burrs still spin freely at the 0 setting, which is apparently an intentional design choice by the manufacturer to prevent burr locking.
On the other hand, this also makes life a little easier, since you don’t have to calibrate or reset the grinder after cleaning, for example.
In my opinion, the price-to-quality ratio is more than fair, and I’d certainly recommend the S3 for pour-over coffee.
